FREQUENTLY ASKED
QUESTIONS.
What do I need to bring to my first class?
Mouth guard, towel and a water bottle. Wear comfortable clothes with no pockets, zippers or hard seams (they tear up your training partners). We have showers on-site. If you want to gear up properly, rash guards and fight shorts are available from your local MMA store. We hold limited stock at the gym.
Do I need to be fit before I start?
A base level of fitness helps, but you don't need to be an athlete. If you can walk up a flight of stairs without dying, you're fine to start. The first few weeks will push you - that's the point - but our coaches scale the intensity to where you're at. Most people find they get fit by training, not before training.
Which martial art is right for me?
Hard to know until you've tried both. Striking (kickboxing, boxing) and grappling (BJJ, wrestling) feel completely different and most people have a strong pull toward one or the other once they experience it. During your free trial week, we recommend sampling at least one striking class and one grappling class before you decide. Plenty of our members end up doing both.
How often should I train?
Two to three times a week is the sweet spot for most people, enough to build real skill without burning out or wrecking your body. If you're keen to accelerate, three to four sessions works well once your body adapts. Quality and consistency beat intensity every time.
Is grappling good for kids?
It's one of the best things you can put a kid in and the reason is less obvious than you'd think. Grappling teaches kids how to be uncomfortable and stay calm. When someone has you pinned, panic is the worst thing you can do - so kids learn to breathe, think and problem-solve under pressure. That skill transfers everywhere. It also builds genuine confidence, not the performed kind. Your kid isn't just told they're capable, they prove it to themselves on the mat, every single session. And because BJJ is technique over strength, smaller and younger kids quickly learn that smarts beat size. That's a lesson worth learning early.
What actually happens in my first class? What should I expect?
You'll be welcomed, introduced to the coach, and paired with someone who knows what it's like to be new. Every class starts with a warm-up, moves into technique drilling - where the coach breaks down the moves step by step - and finishes with positional or live rolling . Nobody is thrown in the deep end on day one. You'll probably feel a bit lost, a bit sore, and completely hooked. That's normal. Most people who try Combat Cartel come back the next day.
